Abstract

Public support for public funding on scientific research is an indicator of a positive attitude toward this issue; besides, understanding of this attitude needs to take into account the social context in which citizens interact with science. Therefore, this study is directed to: 1) analyse the association between support for public funding and public perception of science to identify those citizens who show this positive attitude and 2) analyse context influence. From the multivariate analysis of data form the Iberoamerican Standard on Public Perception, Scientific Culture and Civic Participation Indicators (2005-2009), in six capitals, two conclusions have emerged: 1) survey design does not allow to identify citizens having positive attitude toward public funding of science, and 2) there are important differences attributable to context.
