Charlatans of the pandemic

The ninth edition of Ciencia en Redes, scheduled for March 13, has been held virtually thanks to the enormous effort of the organizing committee, that has been able to adapt the format. The changes in the initial program have allowed us to enjoy, among others, the presentation “Charlatans of the pandemic” by Javier Ordóñez, member of ScienceFlows.

The charlatans have been with us for as long as we can remember, however, in times of a pandemic, when the information multiplies, the need to analyze the quality of the information we receive is even greater.

For this reason, the study of the hoaxes of the pandemic– Javier Ordóñez has explained- will allow us to find out what type of information is disclosed, analyze it from the communicative point of view, from the semiotic point of view and the structure of the news to know what new form of chalatanería has been installed within our networks. Furthermore, this analysis of hoaxes will reveal new forms of communication and credibility or credulity.

“The charlatans are characters that have social virtues that make them interesting: they are optimistic, they are genius, they are witty, they give solutions to problems that others more cautious consider difficult to solve and they are also simple or mysterious solutions …” Javier Ordóñez explained.

Research of ScienceFlows

Since the state of alarm was decreed, at ScienceFlows we started a study on the characteristics of the false information that circulates through WhatsApp. To do this, a WhatsApp number (623037376) and an email (coronavirus.scienceflows@gmail.com) has been enabled and an email to which the received hoaxes can be sent.
